Background

In the early days of using speech recognition in return-to-work and accommodations programs in the workplace, we often trained our clients for more than 40 hours - mostly unpaid - because we were committed to have our clients succeed and we were determined to find the keys to success.
We trained a wide variety of users, from data-entry clerks and computer novices to top management and computer experts.

We learned that:

1) Speech recognition is a highly interactive activity which requires a coach to be available when needed. But, one-on-one training is very inefficient because users need to learn by doing, by practicing and using speech recognition to control their applications and their computer. An individual teacher can actually impede this self-learning process. We found out that what users really need is not a full-time teacher but an on-call coach that they can ask for help anytime they need it.
 

2) Dragon NaturallySpeaking is not adequately or sufficiently designed for workplace productivity. Although advantageous for dictating emails and documents, Dragon’s overall productivity is frustrating and often results in users reverting to the more  familiar use of the keyboard and mouse.
 

Seeing our users struggle because of these major shortcomings, we sought solutions. This lead us to invent a real-time, interactive, speech-controlled, training and help system, a Virtual Coach (which is now patented), and new, more productive ‘speech apps’ (some of which are also patented.) Eight years ago we integrated these features into our VoiceTeach program. Now known as VoicePower, our program is the result of eight years of development and continuous improvement.
